Our Take On The B.V.I. Opening For Charter

"The following was from about 10 days ago but have heard a rumor that the BVI will be announcing new info this week including Covid protocols. That being said, this is our understanding of BVI access to our boats, crew & guests…

Our boats are CVLA approved or in the process (In and out of water). The USCG recognizes this and allows for greater than 6 pax in the USVI.

In order to go to the BVI, the BVI ships registry requires boats to have a SCV2( they always have). During Covid lock down the BVI ships registry announced that they will no longer issue an SCV2 to non BVI flagged vessels. They now deem it is an over reach of their authority to do so. The majority of the PYM fleet as well as most USVI based boats are unable to get this to legally do charters in the BVI.

CVLA is trying to get recognized by MCA, if they do the BVI has to accept CVLA approved boats. I’ve asked for time frame and likely hood of this happening. It sounds likely but no clue on timing.

Separately, the BVI Customs/Immigration don’t really care who comes in, they just want to collect fees and would actually prefer non BVI flagged vessels because they can charge more. I am sure they are allowing noncompliant boats in, they did before covid. In addition, another layer of restriction is the requirement of all guests having travel insurance that covers COVID-19 infection and damages.

Those two BVI entities seem to be at odds with each other. Until the BVI as a whole can give us a path to legally enter the BVI we will continue to do USVI trips. No complaints so far."
